In an inspiring collaboration, CODE313, Michigan Central, and Newlab recently held Detroit’s second annual Youth Drone Demo Day. This event provided local students with an engaging introduction to innovative drone technology, sparking interest and broadening career possibilities in fields such as aerial mobility and tech innovation. Through interactive workshops, young participants explored real-world applications, gaining insights into the technological landscape of the future.
More than 300 students aged 7 to 17 from eight Detroit-area schools took part in hands-on activities, including aerial mapping missions, drone basketball, and flying obstacle courses. This immersive experience allowed them to see firsthand the versatile and transformative uses of drones across various industries.
Participants received on-the-spot training in essential safety protocols and learned the fundamentals of assembling and repairing drones before taking to the skies. This event marked a significant milestone as the inaugural program focused on cultivating aerial mobility skills within Michigan Central’s Advanced Aerial Mobility Region, established in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Transportation in October 2023.
Clarinda Barnett-Harrison, Director of Skills at Michigan Central, emphasized the vital role of involving Detroit’s youth in drone technology. She noted that the initiative aims to simplify the complexities of drone operations while creating essential pathways for future careers in aerial mobility.
“Skills development is central to Michigan Central’s mission. As we work toward becoming a global hub for mobility innovation, it’s crucial to attract both emerging and established innovators to Detroit while equipping our community with the tools necessary for future job opportunities,” Barnett-Harrison explained.
CODE313, a nonprofit dedicated to providing equitable access to S.T.E.A.M. education, fosters foundational skills in local youth and families through interactive coding, enrichment camps, and workshops. Their drone curriculum not only educates students on the various applications of drone technology but also prepares them for emerging career paths.
Bartel Welch, founder and executive director of CODE313, highlighted the immense growth potential of drone technology. He mentioned various applications, including medical supply deliveries, infrastructure inspections, and support in agriculture and search-and-rescue operations.
With backing from local businesses such as DroneWorks and FutureTech, CODE313 plans to host follow-up workshops focused on coding and drone programming. Additionally, they are offering free Drone Pilot Certification Training for students aged 16 and older, alongside a 10-week Introduction to Drones camp for those aged 12-15.
“It’s crucial to expose our youth to career options they may not have known existed. Today’s event is about showcasing the possibilities within drone technology and inspiring students to consider careers as drone pilots,” Welch stated.
This year’s Youth Drone Demo Day featured both indoor and outdoor learning experiences. Students not only explored drone mechanics but also assembled drones and navigated obstacle courses that emphasized precision flying. Demonstrations showcased drone applications in agriculture for water testing and in the entertainment industry. CODE313 also introduced its new Drone Basketball program, a competitive sport that combines team dynamics with drone flying for a fun learning experience.
